Matik recently hosted a dinner with rev ops leaders to discuss the latest in their world, including challenges, successes, predictions, and more. Read on for an overview of the key takeaways from the most recent dinner on September 2024.

Demand for rev ops / CS ops is through the roof

One leader who was in the planning process found that they had 79 OKRs that they had to get to 5, all stemming from asks from other teams. This doesn’t surprise me. As GTM teams are asked to meet aggressive goals with the same, if not less, resources, the big lever they have to pull is efficiency…enter rev ops.

Where should rev ops live

Some CS ops teams report into CS, others into rev ops, some directly to execs. As more and more are being tied to revenue, they are reporting into the CRO. I can see an argument for both. If you’re a team-specific ops team like CS ops, it would be helpful to be closely tied to the team, but at the same time, it could be more productive to be working closely with a team aligned with your expertise. Definitely would love to hear who your rev ops team reports into and the pros/cons you see from it!

Another point made here is that reorgs have been happening quite a bit as well, leading to reshuffling what rev ops has (like enablement, L&D, PMO).

There is a need for dedicated data resources

Someone like a data analyst, who is good at analyzing data and putting it in a format that it can be analyzed (like Tableau, Looker). Without this dedicated resource, ops teams are stuck in a queue system with data engineering teams, fighting for resources. And where should this person live? Consensus was to have it be centralized,, but have individuals on the team be dedicated to a particular function.

Not using AI to its potential

While some teams are leveraging it, they are not utilizing it as much as they thought they would. It’s not a core pillar of strategy (which would’ve felt unheard of a year ago), especially with the increased scrutiny around what they can use.
